It's all go for green
As the marine industry’s drive to be clean, green and sustainable increases, Seawork and its exhibitors keep up the pace.
Committed to being environmentally friendly and sustainable, Seawork exhibitor Damen Shipyards Group operates 35 shipbuilding and repair yards and delivers vessels and components in over 100 countries, here’s how the company is contributing to lean and green.
Meeting regulation with innovation
With the BWMC (Ballast Water Management Convention) standard now extended to cover all vessels, not just newbuilds, Damen Green Solutions has responded with the new InvaSave 300; an external ballast water treatment unit that, in a single pass, removes and eradicates invasive organisms from ballast water discharged from inbound vessels and can also provide ballast water of the same quality to outbound vessels. Certified to IMO-D2 standards, the entire system comes in a fully mobile single 40ft container; ideal for placing on a barge, workboat or trailer for easy movement around a port, harbour or shipyard. Damen says, “The simple solution has significant ramifications for all operational vessels – particularly older builds. The efficiency of InvaSave’s model potentially saves owners months of downtime waiting for a retrofit.”
Matching goals with ambition
New Zealand as a nation is committed to sustainability and Ports of Auckland has taken up the challenge. “We have set ourselves the goal of being zero emission by 2040,” says Tony Gibson, CEO. “To meet this goal, we needed to find a zero-emission option for our tugs.” Ports of Auckland is now set to have the first fully electric ship-handling tug in the world.
“When we first looked into buying an electric tug in 2016, there was nothing on the market,” says Allan D’Souza, General Manager for Marine, Engineering and General Wharf Operations. “…. we knew Damen were building hybrid tugs, so Damen was a logical choice for a partner when we wanted to look at the possibility of developing a fully electric model.”
Damen sales manager Asia Pacific, Sjoerd de Bruin adds, “…. clean on emissions, but also in its source of power. We are not only building a tug, we are using disruptive technology to help serve the energy transition. This aligns neatly with our mission of reforming the maritime industry.”
Commitment begins at home
As part of its ongoing commitment to sustainability, Damen Shipyards Group’s latest project will see 42,000 solar panels installed on the rooftops of production facilities at eight Damen shipyards in the Netherlands. Collectively, the panels will cover some 75,000m2 and generate 13% of the energy required by Damen’s annual operations in the country, approximately 12 MW clean electricity per year. Project manager, Gerard Kornet, of Damen explains, “…. we want to ensure the sustainability of the business for the next generation. We have a very strong focus on this and are continually considering initiatives that can contribute to a sustainable maritime industry.”
Green distribution potential
Energy Solutions has recently become the exclusive UK distributor for WaterWorld's range of electric inboard motors; designed to replace small diesel engines in boats up to 12 metres and a proven and tested option for fleet operators and private owners.
As demand on the marine industry to provide clean, quiet, as well as affordable alternatives to diesel engines grows, Hugh Cunningham at Energy Solutions explains: “This is an affordable electric option and easy to install – just one unit for motor and controller, no water-cooling system and a direct connection to the shaft, without any gearbox. We see a great potential for the WaterWorld electric motors.”
Assisting the low-carbon option
Torqeedo stepped forward to support Greta Thunberg and Team Malizia as the climate activist made her recent Atlantic crossing aboard Malizia II.
“We’re supporting Team Malizia as the voyage sends an important message that, wherever you go, there is always a low-carbon option,” said Dr. Christoph Ballin, CEO and co-founder of Torqeedo. Torqeedo-powered electric boats, including two tenders powered by Deep Blue 50 kW outboards and an inflatable harbour support vessel, assisted Malizia II on her departure from Plymouth UK and with manoeuvring through New York Harbour’s busy shipping channels and docking in lower Manhattan’s North Cove Marina.
Ballin added, “We congratulate Team Malizia and Greta on their zero-carbon transatlantic crossing and hope that their symbolic journey inspires people on both sides of the Atlantic to make progress towards climate-neutral mobility.”
