Seawork debut for Hempel

Industry Database

Global supplier of high-quality marine paints and coatings, Hempel makes its Seawork debut in 2019.

Hempel has supplied marine coatings for over one hundred years. In July 1915, Jørgen Christian Hempel became, at age twenty one, Denmark’s youngest licensed wholesaler when he established Hempel’s Marine Paints. His paint factory’s first mixer was an old coffee grinder. But the factory was soon producing enough paint for J.C Hempel to supply most of the ships along the quays of Copenhagen.

In 1917 he launched the world's first antifouling coating for ships’ hulls and in April this year Hempel celebrated applying Hempaguard®, its award-winning fouling defence coating, to more than 1000 ships.

Today, Hempel leads the world in antifouling and fouling release technology and has an extensive list of reference vessels around the globe. The company’s products keep vessels in prime condition for longer, from the underwater hull to the cargo tanks and ballast tanks, supplying coatings for newbuilding, maintenance or sea stock.

All Hempel coatings undergo stringent testing – in the lab, on test rafts in seas around the world and on test vessels. There is a team of over six hundred FROSIO/NACE qualified coating advisors in shipyards around the world to ensure customers get the best possible solution, while keeping application costs and drydock time to a minimum.

J.C. Hempel was more than a talented businessman; he was also a visionary thinker. In 1948, he established the Hempel Foundation, making it the company’s sole shareholder. Today, the Foundation provides a sound economic basis for the Hempel Group, and supports cultural, humanitarian and scientific charities around the world.
