Award winner supplies electric propulsion systems to Vietnam
European Commercial Marine Award winner Torqeedo is supplying electric propulsion systems for a new fleet of passenger excursion boats in Vietnam.
Fifteen new FRP displacement craft were delivered recently to Vinpearl’s newest resort development in Hoi An, Built by Song Lo Shipbuilding in Nha Trang, the nine-metre vessels are powered by Torqeedo Deep Blue 80 inboard electric motors with BMW i3 lithium batteries. Vinpearl is the largest hospitality group in Vietnam with a chain of luxury hotels, villas and theme parks across the country.
David Hunter, MD of Torqeedo Asia Pacific Ltd., said, “Vinpearl will achieve significantly lower operating costs by equipping the boats with electric motors instead of combustion engines, with zero fuel costs, lower maintenance requirements and an industry-leading capacity warranty,”
Guests at the 62.4-hectare theme park will be able to use the whisper-quiet electric boats to cruise silently through the water with no engine noise, no vibration and no exhaust fumes, allowing them to get close to the rare animals that live in the River Safari without disturbing their natural behaviour.
Mr Hunter added that Torqeedo, who won the award for Maritime Sustainability at the European Commercial Marine awards held last month at Seawork, is seeing increasing demand for electric and hybrid boats in Asia with fleet operators actively pursuing green technologies to reduce air and water pollution. Torqeedo has a considerable number of other marine electric mobility projects currently underway in the region.
