Proposed wind turbine factory at the Green Port Hull facility
Multi million pound plans were submitted in December by Siemens and Associated British Ports (ABP) for a wind turbine factory at the proposed Green Port Hull facility.
Representing a significant milestone for offshore renewable energy development in the UK, this move could have a positive effect on a number of Seawork exhibitors.
The engineering giant’s application is for an offshore turbine factory at ABP's Alexandra Dock. It is hoped it will attract further major investment into the area and to the Humber’s renewable energy industry - not to mention create around 700 new jobs.
Matt Dukes, port director, Hull, Goole & Humber Estuary Services, ABP, told Maritime Journal: “This is the increase in growth in green energy the UK needs for the years ahead. The Port of Hull is in a fantastic location to supply the Round 3 wind farms. Working with Siemens gives us the opportunity to be a part of the green energy revolution.”
Global industry leaders will be watching this project closely. The Green Port Hull vision is to attract other wind energy manufacturers to the vicinity and create a hub for the industry.
The joint application is being made for the demolition of existing buildings at the dock, development of the factory, office and amenity facilities, as well as areas for storage, handling, assembly and testing of the wind turbines.
There is also a separate application being filed for a change of conditions relating to land reclamation in the area to enable the new quay to be used for wind turbine handling.
The application is subject to planning approval this year, but the new Siemens factory could be operational and assembling turbines for large scale North Sea wind farms by the end of 2014.
