South Boats Blows Through The Recession & Returns to Seawork

South Boats Special Projects Ltd will be taking up their usual berths at this years Seawork 2009 exhibition at the bottom of the main gangway. This year however the company has arguably grown into the UK’s busiest and perhaps largest boat building company. The company now has 115 skilled workers on site and a projected turnover approaching £15m for 2009.

Due to demand the company has expanded its production of wind farm service vessels and approx. 16 vessels ranging from 12m to 20m are expected to be delivered this year.

This year will see South Boats bring four vessels to the exhibition, all of which are new models being debuted prior to work commitments.

OFFSHORE RESPONSE 1 is the company’s first South Catamaran 43/12m WFSV Rapid Response Vessel (RRV), which has been built for Offshore Wind Power Marine Services Ltd. Offshore Wind Power Marine Services Ltd. is a well established company already operating four South Catamarans on offshore wind farm projects including North Hoyle, Rhyl Flats, Gunfleet Sands and Thannet. Seawork 2009 is the second time an OWPMS vessel has been exhibited at Seawork as OFFSHORE PROVIDER, South Boats’ second wind farm vessel was exhibited new in 2006.

RHOSCOLYN HEAD is the company’s eighteenth South Catamaran 47/15m WFSV and the first to be fitted with the new aft wheelhouse configuration. Built for Turbine Transfers Ltd. (a subsidiary of Holyhead Towing Company Ltd.), the vessel joins a fleet of four other vessels built by South Boats currently working at Rhyl Flats and Gunfleet Sands Offshore Wind Farms.

CEMAES BAY is the company’s second South Catamaran 69/20m WFSV and currently the largest vessel in the South Boats range. Built for Turbine Transfers Ltd., the vessel is the first of a pair currently in build.

MPI DON QUIXOTE was the company’s first South Catamaran 69/20m WFSV Supply delivered only a few weeks ago and is set to return to the yard for Seawork attendance following a tour of UK East Coast wind farms. The vessel has been built for Resolution Shipping Ltd. and is operated and managed by MPI Workboats Ltd.

With these vessels being exhibited at Seawork, the exhibition promises to be very busy with the pontoons dominated by the South Boats fleet. The next few years promise to be equally busy with larger 17m designs becoming very popular and perhaps set to overtake the 15m vessel as the industry standard. Further vessel orders will be announced at the exhibition.
