Astilleros Cardama's latest newbuild is a multi-role salvage tug for the Galician Government in their homeland and has been named 'Sebastian de Campo'.
The vessel has been built to exceed the specification for its required duties, which include the provision of rescue services for vessels of the Galician Fleet and others fishing in the coastal waters of Northwest Spain. The tug will towing damaged or disabled vessels, rescuing crew as required, fighting fires, and conducting pollution control measures. Sebastian de Campo will also be used for fisheries control and inspection, scientific research, as well as the education and training of fisheries inspectors and others from within the local fishing industry.
The vessel provides excellent manoeuvrability and seakeeping in the most adverse meteorological conditions. Additionally, the conduct of the different rescue and towing operations carried out on the main deck has received special attention in order for equipment placement to guarantee the utmost in crew safety. The comfort and safety of the crew was also paramount in the design of the bridge, cabins, galley, stores and other interior spaces.
The hull has fixed ladders on both sides as well as big rescue zones to better facilitate boarding and rescue craft launch/retrieval during SAR operations. For instances in which sea conditions are not favourable for launching the rescue boats, these zones can be fitted out with a Jason's Cradle or similar recovery systems.
The tug's multiple role capabilities have also seen it equipped with a stabilizer system, container fittings on deck and lashing points, plug boards necessary for scientific research, water connections and other specialised fitments.
Astilleros Cardama is a welcome addition to the gathering of vessel builders which workboat specifiers and purchasers can visit at Seawork International 2008.
